President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20). The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will take place from November 18 to 19, 2024.
Mr. Tinubu landed on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (Monday 3:03 a.m. Nigerian time) and was warmly received by Breno Costa, a representative of Brazil's Ministry of External Relations.
The G20 summit is the culmination of a year-long series of meetings between member nations, aimed at addressing pressing global issues. This year’s summit marks the end of Brazil’s rotating presidency of the G20, which began in December 2023 and will conclude on November 30, 2024.
President Lula da Silva has prioritized critical topics for this year’s discussions, including combating hunger, poverty, and inequality. Other global issues such as the Israel-Hamas conflict and tensions between the United States and China are also on the agenda.
The G20 Leaders’ Summit provides a platform for heads of state to approve agreements negotiated throughout the year and outline strategies to address global challenges. It also includes a review of progress made by ministerial meetings, working groups, and engagement groups within the G20 framework.
President Tinubu is expected to engage in bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. These meetings aim to foster partnerships and advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms, as the country seeks to strengthen its global alliances and attract economic opportunities.
Representatives of the African Union and the European Union were also invited to the summit, underscoring its inclusive approach to addressing global challenges.
This visit marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to position itself as a key player in international dialogues, with a focus on economic growth and addressing inequalities. President Tinubu’s participation signals Nigeria’s commitment to contributing to global solutions and advocating for African interests on the world stage.
